Comfortable Dental Care with Nitrous Oxide

Understanding Dental Anxiety
First, let’s acknowledge that dental anxiety is completely normal and nothing to be embarrassed about.
Whether it stems from a past experience, fear of pain, or just general anxiety about medical procedures, your feelings are valid. Our job is to help you feel safe and comfortable.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative that’s been used in dentistry for over 150 years. It’s delivered through a small mask that fits over your nose, and you simply breathe normally.
✔️ What it does:
- Helps you feel deeply relaxed
- Reduces anxiety and fear
- May make you feel a bit lightheaded or euphoric
- Doesn’t put you to sleep – you’ll be awake and able to respond
✖️ What it doesn’t do:
- Eliminate all sensation (you’ll still need local anesthetic for procedures)
- Knock you unconscious
- Have lasting effects (it wears off quickly)
Is Nitrous Oxide Right for You?
Nitrous oxide is safe for most people and can be especially helpful if you:
- Feel anxious about dental procedures
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
- Need to have multiple procedures done
- Want to feel more comfortable during routine cleanings
We might recommend a different approach if you:
- Are pregnant (especially in the first trimester)
- Have certain respiratory conditions
- Are currently taking certain medications
- Have severe claustrophobia
Safety and Side Effects
Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record when administered by trained professionals. Most people experience no side effects at all.
Occasionally, some patients might experience:
- Mild nausea (usually from receiving too much too quickly)
- Headache (rare)
- Fatigue (also rare)
What to Expect During Your Visit
Before we start
We’ll discuss your medical history and explain exactly how the nitrous oxide works. You’ll have a chance to ask any questions.
Getting comfortable
We’ll place a small, comfortable mask over your nose. You’ll breathe normally, and within a few minutes, you should start feeling more relaxed.
During treatment
You’ll remain conscious and able to communicate, but you’ll feel much calmer. Many patients describe feeling like they’re “floating” or very relaxed.
After treatment
We’ll give you pure oxygen for a few minutes, and the effects of nitrous oxide will wear off completely. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activities.
Cost and Insurance Information
Many insurance plans cover nitrous oxide for dental procedures, especially if it’s medically necessary due to anxiety or other conditions. We’ll check your coverage and let you know your out-of-pocket cost before your appointment.
